The idea for for colored girls... came to Shange in 1974 while she was working at the Henry Street Theater. Her first choreopoem, For colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf, was rejected by the Public Theater and was not performed for another twenty-five years. Shange believed that black girls would have a positive response to the playscript if it were presented as the choreopoem it is. The production in Henry Street Theater was directed by Patricia Harris. Harris stated that she wanted to make the play more accessible to people of all ages. For colored girls... was originally intended for high school and college students. However, the play was revised to include middle-school aged girls.
Ntozake Shange was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and grew up in Washington, D.C. In 1965, she graduated from Howard University. In 1974, she moved to New York City, where she has resided ever since.
After moving to New York, Shange began her career as a performance poet. In 1980, she went to work for the Equity Library Theatre in New York City. To help her in her career, Shange had a two-year relationship with choreographer Debbie Allen. While Allen helped Shange in her choreography, Shange would help Allen find inspiration through direct experience. Shange wanted to become more involved in directing to show that a woman could be as important as a man in directing.
