Download the Xilinx software from the xilinx site.
Editing files and running programs is more natural and convenient on a windows machine, so you need to edit the files in the linux box, and possibly run the programs in windows.
For the Vitis installer, you need to be on a Windows machine. I used the Vitis installer , which seemed most likely to work. Some people have had success with the Xilinx installer. The issue is that it's an offline installer, which means that it has to be downloaded and installed before you can install the ISE. Or if you have a network connection but no installation media available, you can use the Xilinx installer, but it won't let you install without a network connection. Of course, you can save this installer to a USB thumb drive, which is very useful.
This is the tricky part - for some reason, the ISE installer has a custom menu item for 'change settings' which doesn't work - it tries to access the settings on the ISE_EDK, which I would have thought would have been empty, but actually has some settings - you need to change those to have the ISE SDK installed. It's a bit messy - here's what you need to do:
Go to the ISE_EDK folder in the Xilinx download for your specific platform and call it 'ISE_EDK_IS' (or whatever you want).
Go to that folder and open the file 'ISE_EDK_IS_settings.ini'.
Look through the settings - the only ones that are relevant are at the top of the file
Find the line starting 'ISEDriverPath=%ISEDriverPath%'
Change the %ISEDriverPath% to point to the folder that contains the ISE installer (Vitis and ISE are all in the same folder, so don't worry about this)
Save the file
Reboot
If you can't find the virtualbox image for windows, you can get a mac image from the same site. It's free for 10.6 and later, and it has ISE installed as part of it. However, it will only run on your own computer - so you'll have to boot into it a few times a day - not a big problem. If you need to do that, again, you'll have to check the versions line up - if you have a later EDK, you need a later ISE (but it will work on whatever hardware you have). 827ec27edc
