Of the various strategies for expanding the reach of smoking cessation interventions, one strategy that stands to capitalize on the integration of mobile technology is to extend the reach of cessation interventions to smokers beyond the standard cessation settings, such as community-based clinics or pharmacotherapy settings.
The challenge of maximizing the reach of behavioral interventions is one that is ongoing as the technology used to deliver those interventions evolves. If interventions are only offered to a particular target group of people, it is unlikely that they will be used or will have an impact. A variety of approaches to extending the reach of smoking cessation interventions exist, including expanding the target audience, providing more effective interventions, and increasing the frequency of exposure to the intervention. This section reviews current strategies for expanding the target audience for cessation interventions as well as emerging strategies using technology to extend the reach of cessation.
There is also considerable interest in using mobile technology to provide extended access to tailored feedback and other evidence-based cessation interventions that are delivered to smokers in their homes.
In a small study of a mobile phone-based intervention for smoking cessation, smokers received personalized feedback, assessments, and personalized text messages at their homes (Gruber et al. 2011). In addition to the intervention that could be delivered at home, the delivery of the intervention was also automated, which made it possible to increase the frequency of exposure to the intervention, an important element of behavioral interventions (Barber et al. 2012). The use of technology to extend the reach of cessation interventions beyond the traditional settings may be especially attractive for both smokers and their health care providers.
Mobile health technologies may be used to sustain the impact of interventions by providing education, support, or more comprehensive interventions, such as automated messaging systems. Sustained gains in smoking cessation following intervention are possible with sustained use of the intervention. The Community Guide recommends that if a mobile health intervention is implemented, it should be sustained for at least 6 months and that the intervention should provide information on the availability of FDA-approved treatments and provide additional support such as self-help materials, counseling, or access to psychosocial support. The Guide also recommends delivering interventions that use automated messaging systems, such as automated texting programs, delivered by a variety of platforms and formats, including mobile apps and web-based platforms. 827ec27edc
