On 7 December, the distributors of SRK's other film Ram Gopal Varma's Company, Eros Entertainment, filed a petition in the Bombay High Court to block the release of Raees. The controversy began when the Bombay High Court refused to grant Eros Entertainment an injunction against online piracy and termed it “zoo-choo-copter,” saying that it was not a film but only a website. Even before the High Court had ruled on the petition to block the release, Eros Entertainment filed a PIL in the court seeking a stay on the release of the film on grounds that the film was not a tamper proof device. The Bombay High Court subsequently denied Eros Entertainment's petition to stay the release of the film and ordered the film's release. Eros Entertainment then appealed to the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the release of the film. Eros Entertainment later won a stay on the release of Raees at the Supreme Court. The final order was that the release of Raees was not to be blocked but if the film was to be screened in any theatre in India, it should be accompanied by a warning about the Bombay High Court's order to block the release of Raees. The film was subsequently released on the same day as the court order. Most theatres with large screen capacities showed the film without any warning, but theatres with smaller screens like the one shown in the film showed the film with a warning.[61] Eros Entertainment cited the Bombay High Court's ruling as reason for the warning.[62]
The film has been a critical and commercial success. According to India's trade website Box Office India, with its widest release in India of 675 screens, the film grossed over in its opening week, and by the end of its theatrical run, had grossed more than worldwide. It was India's highest-grossing Hindi film of 2013, and its fifth highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.
