This movie is heart-breaking. It's about a man who is broken, so thoroughly destroyed that he has lost everything, even his humanity. The sense of his loss is palpable, and it's hard to watch but it's what makes Redemption a movie that's not so much a movie as a highly effective psychotherapy. Yet it's also about a man finding his way back to himself, his friends and his family. The way he must navigate his way through the wreckage of his life is as unique as the path he chooses, and quite perfect for Statham. I cannot think of a more striking case of a person stripped bare of everything, and then starting to put it all back together again.

I've seen the poster for this movie. I've seen Statham's picture on it. My dear friend and dedicated double agent, Chloe Voytek , sent me the link to the trailer. I put it on my phone and then forgot about it. When I get home from work, I click on it and a moment later I have tears in my eyes. By then I've forgotten the movie, don't have a clue what it's about, but my heart is full. I hear the score in my head and I like the sound of it, but I don't know what the score is from. Just the sound of it.

The climax in particular will have you weeping, and not only because you understand the plot, but also because of the truth of the situation. This is a man who has been broken and will never heal. He will struggle and he will struggle alone. The central scene of the movie is about redemption, but it's about more than that. It's about figuring out what your role in the world is -- and that role is you. You. You are the rock, and you are the glass that can't be broken. You are the person who loves and is loved, who is a friend who is loved, and who is a sister to someone else. You are the only person who can help him put his pieces back together.

But this particular cover, by the hand of our old friend John Carpenter , is a curious beast. It is not the most ridiculous or terrifying of BEMs, and it's not quite a lesbian-killer, even though it is a lesbian killer. But it's also not a female-led BEM, in that it's equally possible to imagine it as being written by a man. And who knows, they may yet give us the right movie.
