The Suncoast Arena was the site of more concerts and appearances in the years ahead, but Presley's last in the state was in Memphis on March 1, 1977. That's the last time he toured Australia -- he briefly returned to the country in 1987 for an Elvis Now! concert, but he was 50 years old and not as he had been. He died of a heart attack four days later, and the Suncoast Arena, though it had been renamed the Midway, would not host another concert by Elvis Presley.
The Suncoast Arena was then a provincial-style venue -- the first concert was held November 5, 1961 -- with a capacity of 8,000. The opening concert was a huge success, with tickets selling out immediately and more than 10,000 turned up. The event was taped for broadcast by the ABC and was titled Elvis Presley: That's the Way It Is. It was the singer's first appearance in the Sunshine State, and he was in great form, playing a mix of rockabilly, gospel and country songs. The concert was released on VHS in 1991, but it was the 1997 Elvis: The Concert VHS and DVD that became the fans' favorite.
Elvis Presley Enterprises have been publishing books, DVDs, CDs, posters, apparel, gifts and collectibles since their founding in 1975. The Official Elvis Presley Books have been available since that time, and the company's catalogue has grown to over 10,000 different titles. Originally published in the 1950s, the Official Elvis Presley Paul Anka series of books has grown to 17 titles now, with the latest addition (and one of the last ever published) being The Paul Anka Elvis Presley Monument Album from 1996.
This is the last album Elvis made with RCA, and its promotion caused all sorts of headaches and confusion, with plans to release it in the fall of 1974 in England but made it available in the U.S. in January 1975. It suffered from being (or better to say, releasing) an album with no singles released, as he'd done in the early 1970s with Jailhouse Rock. But the album was out there, and at least, to this point, the king of rock & roll had a new album out.
