Serial protocols are usually based on the UART and Bluetooth protocol. The latter allows to build small networks of NXT robots that can be connected together either directly or via a hub. The advantage of the Bluetooth protocol is that it has a very high data rate (about 1.3 Mbit/s) and the communication is very simple. The disadvantage of the Bluetooth protocol is that it requires that the NXT robots are powered and that they have a Bluetooth connection. Otherwise they cannot communicate.
Serial protocols are protocols that send information to and from the NXT robot with communication over the UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) serial port. The UartSerialProtocol is an example of such a protocol.
RoboMind is a Java program that runs under Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. It uses the open source Eclipse IDE as a development environment. RoboMind includes the RC programming language as well as a special engine to drive the NXT brick. The scripts are written in the RC language, which is similar to pseudo-code. There is an optional second mode that allows to directly write Java code.
The NXT robotics platform was first developed by Danish company Lego. The NXT kit is designed to be used as a tool for teaching robotics and programming.
The NXT programming language is based on the Java programming language. The Lego NXT kit comes with NXT software, and a programming software that is based on the Java programming language.
The Lego Mindstorms NXT allows users to design programs, and run them on a real Lego robot using a real robot's wheel.
Lego Mindstorms and Robot Operating System (ROS) are two popular robotics platforms. A virtual robot can be an alternative to a real robot, especially if it is expensive, or if the real robot is dangerous. Lego Mindstorms NXT or MINDSTORMS is a robot platform based on Lego bricks, but can also include sensors, actuators and a computer.
Programmable platform devices such as the Arduino, and Raspberry Pi are also platforms. Other platforms that are not programmable, such as the Lego NXT can be used to teach programming and robotics. 827ec27edc
